Peter Gammons: McCarver deserves earned respect | News

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. -- I'm sticking to the story. It was written in the second week of June in 1975. With Carlton Fisk missing the first two months of the season, Tim McCarver at the age of 33 had become a backup catcher for the Red Sox, had batted over .300 in Boston since his acquisition the previous August and had become a galvanizing voice on a team that was building toward a run to the seventh game of the World Series.

Current viewers of national broadcasts are harsh critics of his color commentary.  Just as they were with Joe Morgan.  Hopefully this will ensure that his legacy contains the complete story, not just the most recent.
